“Extreme” SEO Gone Wrong - Why Going to Extremes Can Sometimes Be a Bad Thing

There is extreme SEO that works then there is extreme SEO that does not. There is also extreme SEO which is just plain illegal in the eyes of the search engine. This refers to things like:
Keyword spamming - using your main keywords too many times on a page
Hidden text - hiding keyword text by making it the same color as your background
Doorway pages - an old tactic used by spammers to show search engines one page and visitors another
The above are well known spam tactics that the search engines have all but eliminated from their algorithms. Very rarely will you find these extreme SEO spam tactics working anymore. They are simply a waste of time.
But what about other lesser known extreme SEO attempts? One person reported seeing a web page in which every instance of words like “the”, “it”, “and” and other common words were actually IMAGES rather than text! We can only conclude that the reason for this was that he was trying to maximize his keyword density however this is not the way to go about it. The search engines can quickly pick up on attempted spam and in fact, this would do more harm than good. It is also a huge effort that the person went to for no gain!
Link building is an important part of any seo campaign, in particular an extreme SEO campaign. Google is really clamping down on paid links but that doesn’t mean you can’t make them work for you. You simply need to go to some extreme measures to buy paid links these days. Some people believe that Google staff actually traverse various forums to find paid link for sale threads. So link sellers have quickly caught on and no longer advertise their website publicly. This sort of ‘underground paid link sales’ measure ensures that Google may be unable to tell if your incoming link is a paid one or not.
Another extreme SEO tactic that people have attempted include hosting the website in the country where you are targeting. So if you want a UK audience, host the site in the UK. As yet it is not proven whether this extreme tactic actually works but it does make sense.
Extreme SEO can go bad easily but it can also just as easily work to your advantage as long as you are smart and diligent.
